OCR: ARTISTS DREAM OF MARS H.G. WELLS CINEMA & MUSIC Henry Gayar wrote an astounding, two-volume adventure novel in 1908. The hero, Serge Myrandhal, uses psychic energy to travel through space. He builds a device capable of condensing willpower. With the energy he collects from an army of concentrating fakirs, he takes off in his first spacecraft to Mars. His fiancee and her tutor later join him. On Mars, these three characters discover small red-headed creatures that live underground, as well as a race of air- dwelling Martians. Also in 1908, Gustave Le Rouge published "The Prisoner of the Planet Mars," in which we find psychic energy used once again as a means of space travel. A group of explorers land on Mars and discover several kinds of creatures: man-sized beetles, dwarf squid with human faces, and other oddities. When they return to Earth, they bring with them fearsome vampires; these adventures are described in Le Rouge's second volume, "The War of the Vampires." MARS BETAT
